Martin
Hayes and Dennis Cahill
by
Fran Tyrell
Martin
Hayes accomplishments extend far and wide-- both artistically and
geographically. He has won the All Ireland fiddle championship six times,
and has been a recent recipient of the Irish National Entertainment Award(The
Irish equivalent of the Grammy). Martin and Dennis have performed to enthusiastic
audiences all over the world, from the US to Europe, Hong Kong, and Australia.
Born in Ireland and now living in Seattle, Martin plays in the slow lyrical
style of his native East County Clare. He began playing fiddle at age
7, performing with his father, the great P.J. Hayes of the famed Tulla
Ceili Band. Martin maintains a great reverence for the old players in
his performances, at the same time bringing a uniqueness to his music
with passion and intimacy.
Martin met Dennis Cahill, a native of Chicago born to parents from County
Kerry, in Chicago when he first moved to the States in the 1980's. After
experimenting with new musical styles in a jazz/rock/fusion band called
Midnight Court, the duo turned back to their roots and formed a new musical
relationship. News of their riveting, galvanizing performances spread
like wildfire on both sides of the Atlantic. They released the critically
acclaimed The Lonesome Dove in 1997, and recently released
Live in Seattle, their second duet recording, and the first
to capture the fire and chemistry of their live concerts.
The musical rapport between Hayes and Cahill is so strong it is often
said they appear to be playing the same instrument. While Martin pursues
a melody, Dennis explores the harmony and rhythm within the tunes. Our
allegiance is to the spirit of the moment, says Hayes. Our
primary wish is that the musical experience be one that lifts our spirits
and those of our audience.
