Jack Denihan

Jack Denihan was born in Ardee, Co. Kerry. He is the fourth of six children. His mother, Sarah, was a great concertina player. Thus the household was full of music---every day she played for just plain relaxation. I suppose she had to with 5 boys and 1 girl---she need something to keep her steady-- and music was the answer. The neighborhood greeting was "Sarah--play Paddy Jimmy's reel". so it is understandable that Jack would always be a lover of Irish music.

Added to the music is the love of dancing. He took many prizes at the Feis around the country. His teacher was Willie Dineen, who was a student of Jerry Molyneaux the great Irish step dancing teacher in Kerry. So Jack had the best of the old standard steps.

Jack came to the States in 1949 during the great wave of Irish immigration after the war. He settled in New York. Very soon after arriving Jack he was drafted and served in the U.S. Army. He saw plenty of combat during his sojourn in Korea. After he came home from Korea he went on the N.Y.P.D. When he met his Chicago born wife he resigned from the Police Department and came to Chicago. He loved New York and he has loved Chicago.

A life long member of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Society he has remained faithful in his devotion to that organization. While in New York he was President of St. John's Center in Manhattan. Twelve years ago he was voted Chairman of Francis O'Neill Branch of Comhaltas. When he took over the Club there were thirty some members. Under his direction he brought the Club up to some 200 members. He has worked long and hard for the principles of Comhaltas and now leaves the Chairmanship in the capable hands of others.

Jack says he wants to enjoy his two wonderful children--Patrick, and Deirdre. His wonderful little Danny passed away at 5 and 1/2 years of age. So we club members salute Jack---and all of Comhaltas should join in the praises of Jack Denihan!
